Position description

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for four faculty positions as a part of a cluster hiring initiative in 'Asian American and Pacific Islander Transpacific Futures.' The cluster will consist of a tenure track (Assistant Professor) position in the Department of Ethnic Studies, a tenure track (Assistant Professor) position in the School of Public Health, a tenure track or tenured (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) position in the School of Education, and a tenured (Associate or Full Professor) position in the Department of Geography.

The Asian American and Pacific Islander Transpacific Futures Cluster initiative brings together units in the social sciences and professional schools to understand the formation of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities within the US-Asia-Pacific dynamic, the continued growth and diversification of Asian American and Pacific Islander populations, and the political, economic, and social challenges and opportunities in these communities. The fates and struggles of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are central in the entanglements of people, capital, power, empires, militaries, goods, cultures, ideas, and political movements among Asian, Pacific, and American nations. Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are essential sites of inquiry to understand the futures of California, the U.S., Asian-Pacific-American relations, and the effects these sites and dynamics have for people. The Asian American and Pacific Islander Transpacific Futures Cluster initiative seeks to ensure that UC Berkeley is at the forefront of this consequential research area. This cluster will foster interdisciplinary and evidence-based research on the capacities and challenges of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities to strengthen their communities, address their social conditions, and shape the futures of California, the U.S., and Asian-Pacific-American relations. Three themes and areas of inquiry define this cluster: (1) Community-driven change and the futures of the Asian-Pacific-American region, (2) Understanding diversity and informing change through research and data justice, and (3) Working toward healthier futures and community and environmental wellbeing.

The Department of Ethnic Studies seeks an historian of Asian American and/or Pacific Islander politics and community-driven change, at the rank of Assistant Professor. Understanding Asian American and Pacific Islander politics and community-driven change expansively as taking myriad distinct forms across local, national, regional, transnational and other scales, the department welcomes applications from scholars working on histories within and across this range. Potential foci and areas of specialization include, but are not limited to social movements; relations and solidarities linking the US, Asia, and the Pacific; anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism; anti-militarism and demilitarization; climate/environmental justice; native sovereignty; gender and sexuality; religion; caste; migration; labor. The department embraces intersectional and interdisciplinary approaches to research and teaching. As faculty in the Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies (AAADS) program and a member of the AAPITF cluster, the successful applicant will actively participate in AAADS and the AAPITF cluster efforts. The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including Introduction to Asian American and Pacific Islander Histories and courses on historical methods.

The School of Public Health seeks an Assistant Professor with a focus on issues of health and social justice in relation to Asian American and/or Pacific Islander well being, particularly within the contexts of immigration and migration. Research areas of interest include but are not limited to: migration in the context of climate change; human displacement and movement in the context of colonialism, militarism, violence, conflict, and persecution; Asia-Pacific and US immigration policy and cultural politics; policy and programmatic interventions to address inequities and stressors in AA and/or PI communities; structural violence; community wellness and resilience and cultural capital; the intersection of immigration and/or transnational migration issues and international political and economic issues; human security issues including human trafficking, immigrant detention, refugees, and human rights; addressing the harms of the model minority ideology on AA and/or PI health and well being; data disaggregation to raise the visibility of health disparities facing disadvantaged AA and/or PI ethnic subgroups.

The School of Education seeks an Assistant, Associate, or a Full Professor who examines issues of education in Asian American and/or Pacific Islander communities. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to: multi-/trans-lingualism in the Asian American and/or Pacific Islander diaspora; Asian American and/or Pacific Islander issues in higher education; educational policy impacting Asian Americans and/or Pacific Islanders; community-based education in Asian American and/or Pacific Islander communities; LGBTQ+, immigrant, and/or refugee educational experiences of Asian American and/or Pacific Islander youth. A candidate hired at the rank of Associate or Full Professor may be considered for the role of Faculty Director of UC Berkeley's Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) initiative.

The Department of Geography seeks an Associate or Full Professor with expertise in pertinent subject areas, including but not limited to Pacific Islander studies, Asian diasporas, migration, capitalism, histories of imperialism, labor, social movements, immigration, and environmental change. The successful candidate will enrich the intellectual diversity of the department and fortify its capacity to engage with and contribute to crucial discussions on social, political, and economic disparities, and the multifaceted aspects of race and ethnicity within Asian American and/or Pacific Islander communities. The selected candidate will serve as the senior 'anchor' position in the cross-campus Asian American and Pacific Islander Transpacific Futures Cluster. As such the selected candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting UC Berkeley's ability to actively open new avenues for collaboration, innovation, and meaningful engagement with contemporary issues relevant to Asian American and Pacific Islander communities
