Middle School Math Teacher (2024-25)
Porter-Gaud School is an Episcopal, independent, coeducational day school for 1,650 students in preschool through grade 12. The School is seeking general interest for a potential full-time Middle School Math Teacher for the 2024-25 school year. Our Middle School consists of grades 5 through 8.
The Middle School Math Teacher will teach math to students in 5th through 8th grade in courses ranging from Prealgebra to Honors Geometry. This Middle School Math Teacher will instruct five sections of students in accordance with the content and objectives of the curriculum prescribed by the Mathematics Department Chair and will evidence enthusiasm for mathematics and for encouraging students to grow in knowledge and understanding of the subject.
The Middle School Math Teacher will display a continuous commitment to developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills (intercultural competence) to engage in appropriate and effective communication with students, colleagues, and families from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We desire candidates who will contribute to the school's efforts to continue creating a more inclusive and equitable community where all individuals can develop a sense of belonging.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work with students to develop a love for learning, a sense of academic integrity, and a thoughtful work ethic.
- Appreciate and enjoy interacting with adolescents and partnering with families in the student's academic development.
- Inspire a love of and appreciation for mathematics in our students.
- Participate as an active and positive team member within the Math Department, the Middle School faculty, and the School community as a whole.
- Instruct students in five mathematics classes in accordance with curriculum requirements and objectives, making effective use of technology, textbooks, and other instructional materials as appropriate.
- Establish and actively maintain a class environment where excellence in learning is honored and respectful interactions between and among students are valued.
- Create and design interactive lessons plans, employing a variety of instructional techniques and assessments, which meet the needs of a diverse learning community.
- Collaborate with other math department members to instill a community of reflective, talented, and thoughtful people who are passionate about their work as teachers.
- Supervise students in numerous activities and circumstances at the School and at functions sponsored by the School, and
- Demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of all Porter-Gaud students and to the best interests of the School as a whole.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with a degree or certification in field (Education, Mathematics, Math Education). An advanced degree is an advantage.
- Two or more years of experience teaching mathematics or applied mathematics in a middle or elementary setting preferred. Preference is for experience teaching in a middle school setting, with independent school experience a plus.
- The proven ability to implement classroom management techniques that foster academic achievement, personal responsibility, intellect and individuality within students.
- A record of exceptional collaboration with colleagues to provide the best curriculum and instruction possible for students.
- Familiarity working with students who have individualized education plans, or other educational plans similar to 504 plans, providing accommodations via their specific needs.
- A strong desire to work in a professional academic environment which strives to develop and deliver a strong mathematics curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of our ever-changing student body.
- Fluency in the use of technology in the classroom.

Reporting: The Middle School Teacher reports directly to the Head of Middle School and takes direction from the Math Department Chair.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
