We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as an AI Research Scientist.
Principal Responsibilities
The role of AI Research Scientist will be essential for advancing the development and application of cutting-edge AI techniques and models, with an emphasis on LLMs, to drive innovation and solve complex problems across the bank.
The Opportunity: (Brief Overview of the Role)
As an AI Research Scientist, you'll have opportunities to work on large-scale AI research projects focused on Natural Language Processing tasks, and especially LLMs related to the improvement of our tools and products as well to the creation of new ones. You will contribute to the developments of various LLM techniques and ideas and explore the ethics and fairness of AI. Furthermore, you will apply AI techniques to domain-specific applications, collaborate with other scientists internally and externally on research, and help shape AI capabilities across the organisation. You will also work with the Corporate Ventures team on understanding the emerging landscape of startups in the ecosystem. Your role will further involve sharing knowledge, mentoring others, and establishing yourself as a thought leader in the team. The role offers a dynamic environment for innovation and the potential to shape the future of technology.
What you'll do:
Conducting research and experimentation to develop new AI/LLM ideas, tools, algorithms, and techniques
Implementing and fine-tuning existing LLM models to address specific problem domains or enhancing them with additional capabilities
Processing and analysing large-scale datasets to extract insights and patterns
Collaborating with domain experts to understand specific industry challenges and develop tailored AI solutions
Conducting experiments to evaluate and compare the performance of different AI models and approaches
Optimising and fine-tuning AI models for performance, scalability, and efficiency
Exploring generative AI models, with a special emphasis on LLMs
Addressing ethical considerations in AI, including fairness, transparency, and bias mitigation
Collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate AI models into production systems
Publishing research findings in academic conferences and journals to contribute to the AI/LLM community
Keeping up-to-date with the latest research advancements and attending relevant AI conferences and workshops
Working with the Corporate Ventures team on exploring new innovations in the AI space and preparing technical DD reports as part of evaluating potential equity investments
Work with existing HSBC Ventures portfolio companies in the AI/GenAI space to see how/if their products can be leveraged internally
Mentoring and guiding junior researchers or team members
Developing and maintaining a strong understanding of AI frameworks, libraries, and tools
Applying statistical analysis and data visualisation techniques to interpret and communicate research findings
Staying informed about industry trends and developments in AI-related fields
Requirements
What you will need to succeed in the role: (Minimum Qualification and Skills Required)
In-depth knowledge of AI algorithms, techniques, and frameworks is essential
Deep understanding of RNNs, LSTMs, and especially Transformer architectures is essential
Deep understanding of fine-tuning techniques (e.g., LoRA) and their variants, alignment training and evaluation as well as LLM memory management techniques are crucial
Ability to compare and test transformer variants
Interest to understand and work with multi-modal GenAI tools such as LLMs, stable diffusion, etc.
Understanding of the complex problems in LLMs such as claim extraction, interpretability, evaluation of output, etc.
Strong programming skills are necessary, with frameworks commonly used in LLMs. (TensorFlow, PyTorch, LangChain, etc, Hugging Face)
A solid understanding of the mathematics behind transformers and other LLM techniques
Strong analytical, design and problem-solving skills; excellent team player with ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision
Experience in publishing research papers in conferences or journals (NeurIPS, AAAI, ICML) and/or, contributing to open-source projects, and engaging with the wider AI research community demonstrates a commitment to advancing the field and establishing thought leadership
Intellectually curious and creative who enjoy solving challenging, interesting problems and building breakthrough products with a growth mind-set
Effective collaboration skills to work with cross-functional teams, including domain experts, engineers, and stakeholders, are vital
Be able to work across multiple domains of knowledge and skills, and share knowledge across the team.
Knowledge of architecture disciplines and the ability to put the governance into practice, knowledge of industry standards will be an advantage

Possess a proven track record of driving strategic transformation initiatives, effectively translating strategy into actionable plans, and ensuring successful implementation and adoption
Deep understanding of the current state-of-the-art methods in LLMs, fine tuning LLMs, memory management, prompt engineering, etc.
Familiar with programming languages, like Python/Julia
Capability to build up and setup PoC Environment rapidly with Cloud, Container, etc.
