Position description
The Division of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) in the Department of Medicine (https://dbmi.ucsd.edu/index.html) at the University of California San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and is currently recruiting outstanding faculty at the level of Associate or Full Professor. The appointee will have a leadership role in the Center for Health Innovation at UC San Diego Health (https://healthinnovation.ucsd.edu) and, depending on qualifications and experience, may also be considered for an operational role in informatics at UC San Diego Health.
UC San Diego Health is the region's only academic medical center, with hospitals in Hillcrest and La Jolla that support acute inpatient care and a spectrum of outpatient primary and specialty medical and surgical services, including ambulatory and emergency patient care. Our School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Longevity Science are located within the UCSD campus in La Jolla.
UCSD Division of Biomedical Informatics has research and/or service programs in the following areas: Clinical informatics, clinical research informatics, biomedical data modeling and ontologies, biomedical natural language processing and information retrieval, medical artificial intelligence, privacy technology, global health informatics, equity in informatics, and translational bioinformatics. Its annual extramural funding exceeds $23M/year. It is currently involved in several ambitious initiatives, including creating privacy-preserving networks to share research data and techniques to perform distributed analytics to enable comparative effectiveness research. We are also developing infrastructure to allow researchers to find available biomedical data, working with collaborators from several institutions. Its faculty also play major roles in large NIH programs such as the All of Us Research Program (California Precision Medicine Consortium), RADx-rad Data Coordinating Center, and Bridge to AI Coordinating Center. Its educational portfolio includes pre-and post-doctoral training, supported by three training grants.
The newly established Jacobs Chancellor's Endowed Chair in Digital Health Innovation was created to expand UCSD San Diego Health in several areas of digital health. It is hosted by the UCSD Health Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) with the expected appointment in a faculty role in the academic Division of Biomedical Informatics in the Department of Medicine in the UCSD School of Medicine. The Center for Health Innovation at UC San Diego Health is guided by the Quintuple Aims, to focus on people and community - designing healthcare with these diverse stakeholders to build lasting, impactful health services that scale.
With this position, DBMI and UC San Diego Health intend to expand their efforts in several areas of digital health to include digital therapeutics; remote monitoring, telehealth & wearable devices; digital health services & systems design. These digital interventions rely on various other areas such as healthcare human factors; machine learning and artificial intelligence; and clinical, population, and public health informatics. A joint appointment with other School of Medicine departments or other schools or institutes at UCSD will be supported as appropriate.
This new position will be closely linked to the newly established Center for Health Innovation, and the incumbent will have the opportunity to help shape the initial and future efforts of the Center. This will include contributing to the development of policies and procedures for the Center that advance innovation in health care and population health; helping assemble an interdisciplinary team that supports the mission of the Center; teaching; building relationships with academic, industry, and governmental partners; will demonstrate a commitment to supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion in health informatics; and contributing to the overall mission of both UC San Diego Health and UCSD to maintain and grow their status as world-class institutions. The Endowed Chair will be supported in part through dedicated funding. Additional support will include any extramural research funding an applicant may bring, and/or qualified applicants may also be eligible for operational funding to lead activities in applied clinical informatics within the UC San Diego health system, and/or clinical roles.
The appropriate series and appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate's background and experience.

Salary is commensurate with background and experience and based on the University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded.
As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited. Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Candidates must have an MD or equivalent or DO, DMD, PhD, or doctoral degree in health sciences, or related fields inclusive of biomedical informatics, health-associated large-scale data analysis, data science, implementation science, or population health. Candidates must have advanced clinical training and experience in one or more areas of biomedical informatics inclusive of digital health, including digital health services design, deployment, evaluation, and/or research.
Candidates with an MD or equivalent or DO must have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.
Preferred qualifications
Candidates with experience in the advancement of our training mission serving as faculty advisors or educators for medical students, residents, fellows, graduates, and/or post-graduate trainees are preferred. Candidates with experience in health care system medical information design, management, and/or evaluation, and in the assembly and oversight of interdisciplinary teams with clinical oversight are preferred.
