The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at the University of Washington. Its mission is to deliver to the world timely, relevant, and scientifically valid evidence to improve health policy and practice. IHME has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Manager on the Future Health Scenarios (Forecasting) team. The Research Manager must provide leadership, management, and supervision to dynamic research teams. The individual must help drive the resource allocation, team building, and strategic coordination that result in the production of estimates and interim deliverables on a timeline basis. In particular, this position will oversee and drive forward the planning and workflow for multiple projects that cut across multiple research portfolios and research teams. The position must bring intellectual agility and deft strategic planning skills to meet high-pressure deadlines for research deliverables. The Research Manager will be a key driver in the performance, quality, and efficiency across projects required to routinely produce high-quality, policy-relevant health indicators. To succeed, the Research Manager must develop and exhibit a working understanding of the relevant intellectual and analytic approaches. The Research Manager must also be adept at facilitating communication among technical and project staff with varying degrees of experience from a variety of cultural settings and disciplines.
The position is integral to IHME’s progress on key research projects and its production of deliverables such as research articles, policy-relevant estimates of health indicators, conferences, and reports. Progress toward project goals and delivery on objectives is crucial to IHME’s success at expanding the quantitative evidence base for population health. Overall, the Research Manager will be a critical member of an agile, dynamic team. This position is contingent upon project funding availability.
•Exhibit a command of the intellectual material related to the position’s research portfolio and the relevant results. Individual is expected to develop an astute understanding of the material presented in journal articles, policy reports, and presentations that result from the projects on which they work. •Demonstrate a complete understanding of how methods and analytic techniques map to project deliverables and be agile in navigating and overcoming the challenges that can occur in development and production of the intellectual enterprise. •Thoroughly understand the computational, diagnostic, and data needs of the portfolio and how they interrelate with one another. •Identify need for and direct background research as needed to aid in project management, publication, and proposal development.
•Help set the strategic direction for and manage multiple complex, multidisciplinary projects, turning intellectual agendas set by researchers into action plans that can be implemented effectively across multiple project participants. •Manage workflow components including data identification, transformation, storage, analysis, diagnostics, critique, and presentation in visualizations and publications. Help to achieve continual improvements to efficiency and performance and ensure timely completion of key milestones. •Produce and review study materials including project training materials, presentations, and scientific progress reports in consultation with senior researchers and others as needed. •Cultivate strong relationships and facilitate communication with a wide range of internal researchers and staff to ensure efficient completion of research deliverables. •Help to manage donor relationships, write donor reports, and prepare presentations. •Monitor interdependencies across research teams and key functional areas. Identify risks and solutions. •Organize and support project-wide management meetings to coordinate deadlines and address challenges. •Facilitate assessment of data, methods, and results with colleagues and collaborators.
•Contribute to planning and management activities with senior staff to ensure timely and well-coordinated actions across components of the portfolio; make suggestions, as applicable, for opportunities for new products, such as data visualizations or publications. •Demonstrate knowledge and strategic foresight in helping to manage continuous improvements to the efficiency and performance of the overall research team enterprise. •Make strategic planning recommendations regarding the allocation of people, time, financial, and intellectual resources. Track resource use and needs across projects and make future projections. Facilitate project-specific scoping against available resources. •Help implement portfolio management and institute a uniform approach to project management tracking and planning across projects.
•Manage multiple professional staff engaged in different projects. Effectively set priorities for them across teams and execute on integrated and co-dependent deliverables. Provide timely feedback and assessment of their work and participate in performance review process. •Mentor Researchers and Post-Bachelor Fellows by providing guidance in the development of professional skills and helping them to understand how analytic and methodological undertakings link to project deliverables. •Formulate and implement effective strategies for motivating research teams and helping to ensure high achievement among all individuals on them.
•Represent the portfolio of work to external audiences, including researchers, collaborators, donors, and other interested stakeholders. Cultivate relationships and manage high-level collaborations as needed. •Manage events and meetings with high-level attendees. •Directly engage with high-level external partners and collaborators, including decision-makers in government, donor, inter-governmental, and scientific organizations. •Participate in trainings in coordination with the Office for Organizational Development. •Perform additional duties as assigned that fall within the reasonable scope of this position as member of the Research Management Team.
•Master’s degree in social sciences or related field plus 3-5 years of related project management experience in a highly complex scientific environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
•Previous project management experience including demonstrated ability to think independently, be flexible, and juggle multiple priorities required. •Demonstrated outstanding intellectual capability and knowledge of global health and development issues. •Analytically perceptive. •Must exhibit strong desire and ability to learn intellectual content to facilitate highly complex scientific projects. •Demonstrated record of oral and written communication skills with multiple audiences required. •High-level relationship management skills are critical to communicate with stakeholders at multiple levels, including donors, researchers, field site representatives, administrators, and other external audiences. •Excellent interpersonal skills, a cooperative team player, energetic, able to develop productive relationships with IHME colleagues and external collaborators. •Proven success managing and leading dynamic teams. •Experience in one or more of the following: coordinating computational and analytic processes; designing and giving trainings; coordinating systematic reviews and other research-related tasks; facilitating research production activities; organizing and assessing data and results on a large scale. •Incumbent must be able to work independently and must be able to take multiple priorities and translate them into project completion through expert planning. •Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and collaborative environment to manage multiple priorities while coordinating resources needed to meet deadlines. •A commitment to working to alongside others at IHME to illuminate the health impacts of systemic racism and to work within IHME to make our organization more diverse and inclusive.
