The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of South Carolina invites applications for an endowed chair in Condensed Matter Physics to sustain the SmartState Center for Experimental Nanoscale Physics, to be filled at the tenured Full Professor level with a proposed start date of August 16, 2021. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. and is expected to lead, strengthen, and expand our existing programs in nanomaterials and condensed matter research. Applicants must have at least nine years of research experience by the start date of employment with demonstrated significant achievements in condensed matter research, be internationally recognized for their work in this field, and have a track record of significant external funding to support their scholarly activities. It is expected that the successful candidate will forge collaborations with UofSC faculty to establish a vigorous, internationally recognized research program in condensed matter. Candidates are also expected to strive for excellence in teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level physics courses.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy conducts vigorous research in experimental and theoretical nanoscale physics. The SmartState Center hosts a state-of-the-art shared facility for the design, fabrication, and characterization of nanoscale materials. The recent addition of a newly renovated Class-1000 cleanroom and a helium recovery and liquefaction system fully supports nanofabrication efforts and low temperature studies of novel materials.
