As a natural language processing (NLP) intern at Fitch, you can be part of a unique effort to enhance our analytical workflow with a bit of NLP magic. The Strategic Innovation, Analytics & Research team in Fitch's Global Public Finance & Infrastructure department is seeking a part-time computer science or data science intern to prove and prototype novel applications of NLP within our analytical processes.
The ideal candidate for this internship will already have a strong familiarity with classical machine learning techniques, deep learning techniques, and natural language processing. This internship is not designed to teach ML and NLP on the job; rather, it is an opportunity for a student who already has a good foundational knowledge of ML and NLP to learn about practical applications in the financial services industry and develop a portfolio of work.
Collect and clean data; then think creatively about feature engineering. As always, this is a significant part of the work!
Train, test, and assess viability of NLP models built using standard Python packages (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
Be prepared to iterate quickly, build proof-of-concept models, and prototypes. Scaling to production will happen later.
Explore current state-of-the-art modeling approaches in the literature and adapt existing code to solve our business challenges.
Prior coursework or academic research experience in NLP
Prior experience working with word embeddings and document embeddings
Proficiency in scikit-learn, TensorFlow and/or PyTorch as well as common NLP packages
Strong ability to assess the performance of models and present your findings
Passion for thinking creatively about applications of machine learning and NLP
