Senior Counsel, New Payment Flows

Mastercard is searching for an experienced commercial lawyer to be a member of a highly skilled legal team supporting Mastercard's New Payment Flows, North America (NAM) business with a focus on bill payment. This role will work closely with the global New Payment Platforms product team and other teams within Mastercard to launch new products and solutions, navigate new business models, technologies and partners to bring added value to our relationships with merchants, acquirers and issuers across multiple channels.
This is a full-time role based in Purchase, New York. It dual reports into the Senior Managing Counsel, New Payment Flows, NAM and the Senior Managing Counsel, New Payment Platforms.
Role: This full-time role will dual report into the Senior Managing Counsel in the NAM legal team based in Purchase, NY and the Senior Managing Counsel, New Payment Platforms. Key responsibilities for the role include: - Acts as the principal day-to-day advisor for clients, including partnering with the business and legal specialists to apply applicable laws and regulations that facilitate commercial operations and activities; - Autonomously structures, drafts, reviews and negotiates sophisticated legal agreements related to business operations and activities, including identifying risk, recommending modifications and approvals of legal agreements; - Helps to set and implement strategy for the business team, as well as responsibility for projects that benefit the team or department while also managing the day to day legal matters; - Facilitates thoughtful risk-taking to enable the business unit to deliver on strategy; - Partnering with product, sales, franchise, marketing, and other teams to support the development and maintenance of products and solutions that differentiate Mastercard and meet our customers' rapidly changing needs; - Communicates changes in laws and regulations and trains clients on risks, legal consequences, and alternative actions, as needed; - Partners with legal specialists and outside counsels to coordinate research, investigate legal issues, and ensure compliance with regulations; - Collaborates with in-house specialists (including Regulatory, Compliance, Data Privacy, Franchise, and Intellectual Property counsel) to identify relevant issues and help the business effectively navigate legal risks and implement appropriate controls, policies and processes; - Trains and educates clients on risks, legal consequences, and alternative actions, as needed; - Identifies needed process improvements and efficiencies; owns and executes solutions to support our transformation strategy and drives towards streamlining processes to increase ease of doing business; - Operate as a trusted advisor to the New Payment Flows team on a daily basis with respect to wide-ranging issues; and - Coaches and mentors others while serving as a technical expert, often leading cross-functional strategic initiatives and sharing legal knowledge for a business or market.

All About You: - JD from an accredited law school; admitted to and in good standing with the NY bar. - Proven experience working with complex legal transactions at a reputable law firm, or as an in-house counsel. - Strong drafting and negotiations skills with the ability to analyze and manage complex issues and deal structures and to progress them to conclusion. - Highly confident, a thought leader and a problem solver to be able to tackle unfamiliar situations. - Keen business insight and strong communication skills to interact confidently and effectively with internal clients, Mastercard customers and colleagues, including senior management. - Must be a team player and willing to take on a variety of responsibilities and roles that support the team, department and the company. - Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced team environment. - Solutions-orientated and able to work flexibly, under pressure, and with tight deadlines. - Lively interest in the business of Mastercard and an enjoyment of working in a fast-paced environment. - Candidates with experience in technology, FinTech or payments will be at a distinct advantage.
