What is the opportunity? RBC Capital Partners ("RBCP") is the venture capital and private equity ("VC/PE") investment platform of RBC, as part of the Strategy and Corporate Development group. In this position you will have the opportunity work on both direct venture capital investments and investments into third-party managed VC or PE funds. You'll also have the opportunity to work with a number of RBC business units as well as with RBC's in-house incubator, RBC Ventures, where venture capital investments support our strategic objectives.
The position is fully accountable to the Managing Director, RBC Capital Partners for successful achievement of agreed upon goals and objectives, and for driving a high level of performance, operational effectiveness, and sustainable value creation for RBC shareholders. This includes taking a proactive approach to ensure all control requirements are monitored and adhered to on behalf of the business/functional unit.
What will you do? As an Associate you will help us manage the day-to-day activities of our team in a number of areas, including :
Performing market research and due diligence for potential investments, which could entail
financial modeling and analytics
testing products and services
competitive market analysis
speaking with industry and technical experts
conducting reference checks of company founders and executives as well as with customers and partners
preparing valuation analyses and investment memos
Meeting entrepreneurs with businesses in which RBC Capital Partners may be interested in investing, and performing initial screening of those businesses
Maintaining a robust CRM system which keeps up- to -date the status of companies in our investment pipeline as well as summarizes call notes and other pertinent deal information
Working with RBC Capital Partners' portfolio companies, including research projects, competitor analysis, valuation work, financial modeling, etc.
Designing and executing projects of your own direction that help RBC Capital Partners and/or our portfolio companies
Networking with peers in other venture capital firms as well as the Toronto startup community and developing relationships with RBC Capital Partners' fund investments to understand their portfolio and pipeline where possible
Performing market research to help identify new investment trends and opportunities.
Interacting with RBC business units and RBC Ventures (RBC's in-house incubator) teams to ensure a high level understanding of their strategic focus and areas where a venture investment may be appropriate.
What do you need to succeed? Must-have
Outstanding analytical and critical thinking skills
Exceptional written and oral communication/presentation skills
Detail-oriented, proactive, and self-motivated with strong drive and the ability to self-direct - your work and time will be somewhat open-ended by nature and you must be able to identify and execute on opportunities to contribute to the team sometimes with little direction
Advanced skills with Excel, PowerPoint and Word including excellent financial modelling skills
Strong understanding of Information Technology concepts and practices with a bias towards mobile, web, data analytics/management, and/or AI/ML
Entrepreneurial attitude and interest in working with seed and early stage companies
Solid understanding of business and financial concepts
Strong interpersonal skills - you'll often be talking to entrepreneurs and other investors
Strong organizational skills - you'll be keeping track of documents for a large portfolio of investments
B. Eng., CFA, and/or MBA preferred and/or equivalent experience.
Exposure to venture capital investing with a good understanding of due diligence practices and investment structuring
Experience in one of Capital Markets, Investment Banking, Accounting or Management Consulting.
Ideally some prior design and/or programming experience
