About the opportunity
Reporting to the Manager - Investment Tax, this role will support the day to day delivery of the Investment Tax function. The Investment Tax function covers tax due diligence, structuring of investments, providing investment tax advice on new and existing investments and assisting with the onboarding of investments particularly with the custodian. You will also support the overall tax strategy by protecting both the members' returns and the Fund's tax profile and ensuring readiness for regulatory engagement.
Key tasks and responsibilities
Support the tax due diligence process for proposed investments
Design, validate and monitor the Fund's investment structures (both domestic and offshore structures) to ensure that the structures are within the Fund's tax risk appetite
Provide tax advice as required for ongoing portfolio management work
Prepare well documented tax advice on new investments
Support the Fund through its engagement with the ATO and other regulators on investment tax related matters
Proactively identify potential opportunities to optimise tax, reduce tax operational risks and protect the fund's tax profile
To succeed in this role, you will have strong analytical and problem solving skills to be able to solve complex tax problems. You will also have refined research and interpretation skills with the ability to produce high quality, easy to understand tax advice. You should be able to demonstrate:
Extensive knowledge and experience across investment classes from either direct investment management / operational experience or through industry fund exposure
Knowledge of foreign tax laws, double taxation agreements and rules for common investment vehicles in foreign jurisdictions (e.g. Caymans, Guernsey, Jersey, Bermuda, Ireland, Luxembourg, Delaware etc)
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to solve complex tax problems
Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal, written and listening) skills and strong negotiation and influencing skills with all levels
Sound knowledge of general ledger accounting and financial statement reporting
To be successful in this role, you will be required to keep up to date with legislative changes and ATO guidance to ensure the Fund remains in compliance with tax laws. You will hold formal tertiary qualifications in commerce and/or law based disciplines (e.g. Bachelor of Commerce/Business/Economics/LLB or equivalent) - a postgraduate qualification in taxation and/or accounting (e.g. Master of Taxation/Laws and/or CA) would be highly regarded.
