This role will be responsible to manage the implementation of various technical accounting guidance and oversee the assessment and enforcement of existing accounting policies. This role will support the Director by using acquired technical accounting expertise and conducting research to efficiently draft accounting documents that are well thought out, cohesive, and articulate, which will support internal positions and be evaluated by internal stakeholders and external auditors.
We anticipate this role will also specifically provide support to help address SVB's global expansion using existing (or acquired) international accounting knowledge, as well as stay current with US developments. This role will be responsible to determine how to maintain the Company's approximately 30 accounting policies, when to update each (within a prescribed timeline) and how best to validate Company-wide compliance with GAAP for all accounting policies. This role should also be able to provide simple responses to the controllership / business on basic accounting questions using without the need to consult. This may require quick research, though more detailed or extensive questions / requests should be escalated (using professional judgment to determine when to escalate). The role should also be responsible to help create a repeatable and efficient approach to managing policy in international jurisdictions (and then for implementing that approach).
Delivers guidance and advisory services to stakeholders in connection with the application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to new, significant or non-routine transactions executed by the Company including, but not limited to, investing, funding and financial risk management transactions.
Prepares technical accounting analyses that must be well documented, soundly reasoned and demonstrate a clear understanding of covered business activities.
Establishes and maintains strong, collaborative working relationships with finance partners and other stakeholders in order to understand the business and to provide ongoing guidance on new business initiatives.
Monitors standard setting developments in GAAP (and international financial reporting standards (IFRS) when relevant) that could impact the Company's accounting policies, practices and disclosures.
Participates in the presentation of interpretative views to management that pertain to new or non-standard transactions or standard setting developments in GAAP.
Reviews select disclosures to be made in the Company's financial statements and collaborates with financial reporting resources to ensure accuracy and completeness of such information.
Collaborates with key stakeholders in driving the implementation of new accounting and reporting requirements while ensuring that the Company's accounting policies comply with new authoritative guidance.
Drives consensus on policy positions with external auditors.
Proposes solutions to technical accounting questions
Must have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field
Master's in Accounting (or business field) preferred
CPA strongly preferred (or ability to sit for CPA exam)
Minimum 4-6 years' relevant experience required
Should have experience drafting technical accounting documentation
Mix of public accounting and public company industry experience preferred
Experience in banking or financial services industry preferred
Able to make suggestions on ways to improve efficiency / better cover risks
Challenges decisions made by leaders and provides alternative views when appropriate
Working knowledge of US GAAP
Ideally familiarity with IFRS
Understanding of how to conduct basic accounting research and form reasoned arguments
Must have excellent written communication skills
Must have excellent verbal communication skills
Ability to adapt embrace change in a large and rapidly growing company
Ability to work alone with minimal supervision
