Description of the Position S&P Global Ratings is seeking an Associate General Counsel to work in its London office providing legal counseling in support of its credit ratings business. The candidate must be a motivated team player with superior legal ability and written and oral presentation skills, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Proficiency in Spanish, French or German in addition to English is an advantage. What the Position Entails
Providing legal assistance to rating analysts, including assisting in their review of transactional legal structures and related legal opinions and counseling analysts about S&P Global Ratings' legal criteria and on other legal issues relevant to financial market sectors, including structured finance.
Analyzing and interpreting relevant laws and regulations to keep analysts up to date on legal developments affecting their analysis including cross border/conflicts of law issues.
Providing thought leadership to further strategic goals of transparency and market education by helping to explain legal criteria and methodologies.
Preparing and conducting internal training on legal matters for credit rating analysts.
On request, developing, reviewing and revising criteria, particularly regarding their legal implications.
Providing general legal counseling in support of S&P Global Ratings including:
Counseling Ratings Services' methodology, internal control and compliance functions.
Counseling S&P Global Ratings' personnel regarding external speaking engagements, publications and other outreach efforts.
Admitted to practice law in England (and/or another European jurisdiction). At least 5 years post qualification experience in structured finance, or a related practice area in which the candidate has gained appropriate knowledge of structured finance and capital markets principles, in either a major law firm or in-house position
Strong leadership, sound legal judgment and interpersonal and negotiation skills, including the ability to influence others who are not in the same line of authority
Excellent presentation, writing and analytical skills
Excellent communication and listening skills with internal/external audiences
Self-motivated and well organized with the ability to handle multiple, high-priority projects while attending to details; able to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure
Hands-on, energetic, intellectually curious
Professional demeanor, team player, ability to interface effectively with internal/external parties
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
