Main Purpose Review function for Group VAT returns (including UK Group and a number of international branches) and act a focal point for VAT accounting and reporting for overseas businesses as well as VAT technical queries. Support review of international businesses to document VAT implications of intercompany recharges.
To manage preparation of the Group VAT liability in accordance with legal requirements, and production of the UK VAT Return for submission to HMRC.
Conduct a continual process review - maintain an up to date manual of the VAT return process.
Provide tax technical answers to ad hoc queries as they arise.
Provide technical written replies to HMRC correspondence.
Monitor and challenge PESM to ensure suitable VAT recovery .
To provide VAT training to other parts of the business and accounts department (such as brokerage receivable and accounts payable).
Monitor and challenge manual postings to VAT accounts.
To ensure that periodic VAT journals are uploaded to GL on a timely basis, and that a robust control environment exists around the Management Accounts VAT process.
To liaise with our external auditors to ensure a smooth quarterly and year-end process.
Manage timely and accurate production of overseas VAT returns.
Assistance with other transaction taxes including Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) and stamp duties as necessary.
Co-ordinate VAT compliance for Europe and Asia - ensuring VAT & GST returns are filed and paid on time.
Liaise with external advisers .
Previous experience of completing VAT returns and a strong technical understanding of HMRC VAT compliance/ VAT accounting and good understanding of international VAT issues.
Previous experience of working in a partially exempt business advantageous.
Management experience of staff (VAT Accountant and other tax accountants providing support).
Excellent Excel skills and knowledge of finance systems (Oracle).
Able to investigate and amend reported financials to remove known inaccuracies.
A drive to fully understand the detail and resolve issues in the correct way.
Ability to work autonomously and under pressure.
Encouraged to automate or change existing processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
