We are looking for a highly motivated Director, Investment Risk Private Markets to join our team!
Reporting to the SVP Investment Risk, the Director, Investment Risk Private Markets (“Director”) will be responsible for supporting, from a risk perspective, portfolio and investment decisions in Private Markets including transactions in Global Real Estate, Infrastructure, Private Equity and Private Credit markets. The Director will also assess opportunities in new markets and/or products in Private Markets. We are looking for an investment risk professional with private markets investment experience, who is mindful of current and anticipated social, demographic and environmental shifts that impact risk and may need to be factored into the investment decision making process, i.e. climate change.
As a Member of Our Team, You Will be Responsible For:
Supporting Front Office (“FO”) decision making from a risk perspective, across Private Market transactions (Infrastructure, Private Equity, Real Estate, Private Credit).
You will Independently opine on the level of risk associated with investment decisions, and ensure risks remain within IMCO clients’ appetite and that risk taking is appropriately rewarded, thinking beyond “established” risks.
Working closely with the FO during the initial screening/due diligence phase, you will ensure risk management is embedded right from the start of a potential transaction to its completion. Investment Risk Support will also be responsible for ongoing monitoring of the risk profile of the asset once a transaction is completed and how its risk impacts the portfolio over time. You must also monitor an asset and a portfolio’s change in risk profile over time.
Contribute to the design, build and enhancement of appropriate risk management approaches for Private Markets, reflecting the global investment activities of the business, and support the growth of IMCO.
Building appropriate models to measure risk for Private Market exposures, considering idiosyncratic risks.
Providing leadership and direction of the management of idiosyncratic risk associated with private market investments, liaising closely with FO decision makers, asset management teams and the Investment Risk Research Team.
Working collaboratively with the business teams and the other risk function teams to ensure appropriate processes, policies and protocols are established to identify potential areas of vulnerability and risk. You will provide advice on emerging issues/trends and their implications, being able to recommend approaches to resolve issues and mitigate risks.
Providing leadership and guidance on investment risk related issues (market, credit, liquidity, macro).
Performing “ad-hoc” stress testing and analysis reflecting market views and emerging concerns. Determining appropriate courses of action to address issues identified, ensuring senior leaders are apprised and key internal/external stakeholders are informed as necessary.
Monitoring compliance with portfolio mandates and conducting monthly portfolio reviews assessing the drivers of portfolio performance and largest risk contributors. Identifying significant changes to risk contributors.
Developing and managing relationships with all stakeholders across the organization to understand operational and business activities and issues, providing expertise and advice. Sharing information, resolving issues, identifying opportunities to leverage resources and collaborating on projects and initiatives; effectively participating in senior strategic decisions.
Identifying and leveraging relationships with key external stakeholders, professional associations, partners and industry colleagues to share information, keeping up to date on developing best practices, trends and/or legislation/regulations.
What do you need to succeed?
A minimum of 10 years of hands on experience in private markets investments or risk management in a global financial institution, asset or investment manager.
A graduate degree (e.g., MA, MBA), and/or a professional designation (e.g. CFA, CPA, CA) is required.
Exceptional communication and inter-personal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and engage with all stakeholders.
Proficient knowledge of private markets in multiple jurisdictions, and applicable regulatory requirements within an asset management environment.
Role model work ethic, using the highest level of integrity under all conditions.
Ability to be a commercial thinker who is pro-active and results-oriented with the ability to provide value-add input to the business.
Ability to identify, assess and resolve complex risk-related matters, including recommendations on mitigation and/or prevention strategies.
