S&P Global is seeking an energetic, business-minded and self-motivated attorney to oversee management and protection of the Company's intellectual property assets, including patents, trademarks, copyright, and trade secrets. This role will be responsible for developing and implementing an enterprise-wide legal IP strategy that will support innovation, product development, and brand protection across S&P Global and its divisions. The attorney must be capable of working successfully with a range of internal business and legal teams and with senior leadership at S&P Global.
This position reports directly to the Deputy General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer and is based at the Company's corporate headquarters at 55 Water Street, New York, NY.
Provide legal support and advice to R&D, product development, technology, engineering, commercial, branding and other internal teams, including by implementing processes that will support the development and protection of patentable inventions or other IP across S&P Global and its divisions.
Develop and implement an enterprise-wide patent prosecution, maintenance, and enforcement strategy, and oversee outside counsel in preparation and prosecution of patent applications (U.S. and foreign) to maximize quality and efficacy of applications.
Manage the Company's trademark portfolio.
Advise on and develop strategies to commercialize the Company's IP assets.
Identify and develop strategies to mitigate threats and risks to the Company from an IP perspective.
Other Required Accountabilities:
Lead IP due diligence in mergers, acquisitions, and financings.
Investigate potential infringement of the Company's intellectual property and develop strategies to address such infringement; support defense of alleged infringement actions against the Company.
Provide legal support and advice as necessary to business and legal teams in S&P Global's divisions in connection with the structure, negotiation, and drafting of licenses and other complex IP-related agreements.
Design, implement and manage training and education programs on various areas of intellectual property law.
Track global developments in evolving laws, rules and regulations governing the protection of intellectual property.
Required Education, Skills and Experience:
J.D. from an accredited law school with exceptional academic credentials and at least 10 years of relevant intellectual property experience gained at a leading law firm and/or in-house at a publicly-traded company.
In-house experience is a plus.
Experience with global intellectual property issues is a plus.
Must be admitted, active and in good standing with the New York State bar or eligible to register as New York Registered In-House Counsel.
Candidate must be highly analytical and have exceptional business and legal issue identification and problem-solving skills.
Requires a practical, business-oriented approach to problem-solving; candidate must be able to effectively counsel internal clients by providing them with clear, concise and commercial advice, and creative solutions where necessary, on established timelines to meet their business needs.
Candidate must be able to operate autonomously while being a team player who brings a positive, "can do" attitude to the workplace and works collaboratively with other members of the Legal team and with internal clients.
